MA5P2 The Symmetric Group 2008-2009
by Daan Krammer
Second handout: pdf. Contents: Characters of GL(V).
First handout: pdf. Contents: (1) Background on representations of the symmetric group; (2) Specht modules.
Recommended exercises from Stanley's book: 3,4,5,7,8. More exercises (30/10/08):
pdf. Even more exercises (01/12/08): pdf. Some more exercises can be found on the handouts.
We shall study sections 7.1-7.18 from Stanley, Enumerative Combinatorics, volume 2, except 7.8 and 7.16. After that, I expect to do more about representations of the symmetric group.
Photocopies of the literature we study become gradually available in the filing cabinet outside the general office. Click here to find scans of this and other relevant literature.
About the prerequisites: A handout will be made available in due time summarizing what we need to know about complex representations of finite groups. If you know nothing about this, never fear! It is perfectly possible to follow the module by taking the results in the handout for granted and using them. Similar material can be found in chapter 6 of P M Cohn, Further Algebra and Applications.
