Spiral Wave Spectra and Spiral Breakup

Paul Wheeler and Dwight Barkley

This research concerns the linear stability analysis of spiral waves. Leading eigenvalue spectra have been computed for spiral waves for many years, e.g. [1,2], and explain the meandering instability very well.

To address core breakup and far-field breakup of spiral waves it is necessary to consider the stability spectrum for waves on large domains. The figure to the right shows such a spiral wave in a reaction-diffusion model.

Our computed spectra confirm the absolute spectra predicted by Sandstede and Scheel [4,5]. The results show that point eigenvalues are responsible for both core breakup and far-field breakup of spiral waves. Read more about these results here [3].
