We will survey the landscape of smoothing theory for open 4-manifolds, with a focus on recent developments in the field.

Sergei Gukov: 4-manifolds and Vertex Operator Algebras

In this talk I will explain a map (motivated from physics) between smooth structures on 4-manifolds and vertex operator algebras. Hopefully, it can help to address the classification problem on each side (ideally, one might hope this map to be a bijection). I will explain how familiar gadgets on one side (Donaldson invariants, and certain invariants of instanton moduli spaces) are mapped to standard objects used by practitioners of vertex operator algebras.
