Research Interests
My main research area is Thermodynamic Formalism. I am particularly
interested in applications to other areas of mathematics, including
geometry, number theory, algorithms and analysis. I am an editor for
the journals
Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems
and The journal of Fractal Geometry.
A Little Background
I was both an undergraduate (in
Physics) and a graduate student (in Mathematics) at
Warwick. My PhD supervisor was the late William
Parry, FRS.
I returned to Warwick for the first time from 1992 to 1995 (as a Lecturer,
then Reader) and for the second time in 2005 (to a chair).
When not at Warwick, I held permanent positions in Edinburgh (New Blood Lecturer, 198588), Porto (Investigador Auxiliar, 198992) and Manchester (Fielden chair, 19962004).
I have held visiting positions at IHES (Paris, 198485 and 20122013), IAS (Princeton, 198889), MSRI(Berkeley, 1989), CalTech (Pasadena, 1990) and
Grenoble (1990).
I have also been the recipient of
Royal Society
University Research Fellowship (199297), two Royal Society
Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowships (199899 and 20072008) and a
E.U.
Marie Curie Chair (2004). From December 2014, I will hold an EPSRC leadership fellowship.
In addition, I have also
coorganized a 6 month programme on Ergodic Theory, Geometric Rigidity and Number
Theory at the Newton Institute
(Cambridge, 2000), a 12 month symposium on
Ergodic Theory
and Dynamical Systems (Warwick, 20102011) and a 6 month programme
Hyperbolic
dynamics, large deviations and fluctuations
at the
CIB (Lausanne, 2013). In the Spring of 2016 I will be coorganizing a programme
at ICERM (Brown, USA).
