Overall case ============ This bid is for the 2007--08 Warwick symposium in Algebraic Geometry WAG07-08. It will feature several weeks of teach-in, active periods including regular courses and seminars, and 4 or 5 international workshops on major topics of current interest in the subject. Follow-up activities will take place over 3 or 4 years, including preparing books and papers arising out of WAG07-08 and lecture courses and summer schools to disseminate the material. The major research topics we feature at the outset are: Research topics: HD MMP: higher dimensional minimal model program XPL: explicit methods, surfaces, 3-folds, explicit birational geometry TQFT: geometry of topological quantum field theory ARITH: rational points on curves and higher dimensional varieties MOD: moduli spaces: Ag, Mg, GHilb and VBAC others (mirror symmetry, GW theory of Fano orbifolds ..) Technical subjects: graded rings, syzygies, weighted homogeneous spaces toric geometry, tropical constructions COM: commutative algebra, complexes and applications of computer algebra DER: derived categories others (stacks, Picard-Fuchs diff equations, ..) We group these together to provide a focus for active periods and workshops, and to have something to argue about in this application. However, we view it as a creative aspect of our approach that our interests are inextricably tangled together both with each other, and with other research areas in geometry, algebra and theoretical physics. These topics between them cover most of the most exciting and innovative issues in current algebraic geometry research. In the calendar, the intention is that a 1-week workshop is preceded by a couple of weeks or couple of months of active seminars, including in most cases an introductory workshop or school for nonspecialists (maybe only 1 or 2 days); how this works out will vary between the different activities. 7 Cases of the main components: HD MMP, XPL, TQFT, ARITH, DER, COM, MOD
