I was a founder member of European Women in Mathematics (EWM), an organisation
which aims to support and encourage women mathematicians across Europe. EWM is the European counterpart of the US based Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM). With a few colleagues, I guided EWM from its inception in 1986, playing a central role in setting up the infrastructure and organising the 3rd EWM Meeting in Warwick in 1988. EWM now holds biennial general meetings. I also initiated related activities in the UK including British Women Mathematicians' Day, now run by the LMS Women in Maths Committee.

A brief and personal history of EWM.
