David Owen - A brief career history

Educational qualifications:

B.A. Honours (First Class) in Geography (1975) and Ph.D. in Geography (1982), both from Liverpool University.

Employment:

October 1978-September 1980: Research Fellow, Dept. of Geography, University of Durham. Developed a pilot manpower information system for the Northern Region of England, which was later developed (by the late Bob Nelson and his colleagues) into the National On-Line Manpower Information System (NOMIS) for the Office of National Statistics.

October 1980-December 1986: Research Associate, Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies, University of Newcastle. Worked on local labour market analysis, computer cartography, handling large data bases, analysis of population change and migration, and the development of population group-specific travel-to-work areas.

January 1987-September 1989: Research Fellow, Institute for Employment Research, University of Warwick. Was involved in the production of national and regional forecasts of the labour market, including projections of employment change by occupation. Also worked on local labour market analysis and analysis of migration.

October 1989-September 1991: Research Associate, Dept. of City and Regional Planning, University of Wales, College of Cardiff. Worked as a member of the Wales and South West Regional Research Laboratory, focussing on local socio-economic analysis and Geographical Information Systems development.

October 1991 to date: Research Fellow (Senior Research Fellow from January 1994), Centre for Research in Ethnic Relations, University of Warwick. Concerned with the analysis of the social and economic circumstances of minority ethnic groups in Great Britain. Specialised in the analysis of Census of Population data for minority groups.
