Publications

Pdf and dvi files for some of my recent papers and joint papers can be downloaded from here.

The book The Maximal Subgroups of the Low-Dimensional Finite Classical Groups
by myself, John Bray and Colva Roney-Dougal has recently been published by
Cambridge University Press as London Mathematical Society Lecture Notes 407.

Or click here to see a list of errors and misprints that have come to light.

The Handbook of Computational Group Theory
by myself, Bettina Eick and Eamonn O'Brien,
published by Chapman & Hall/CRC, appeared in January 2005.

Editorial Activities

I am Editor-in-Chief of:
LMS Journal of Computation and Mathematics,
and I am on the editorial board of the journals:
  • Experimental Mathematics,
  • Archiv der Mathematik,
  • Journal of Algebra,

    Software

The following standalone software can be downloaded:
  • kbmag2 - Version 2 of a recent package for Knuth-Bendix in monoids, and automatic groups.
This is now also avaialable as a GAP4 package, and is also implemented in Magma.
  • isom_quotpic (written with S Rees) - a package for isomorphism testing between finitely presented groups, and for plotting parts of the finite quotient lattice (using X-windows) of a finitely presented group.
  • I have contributed a substantial body of package code to Magma. See here for further details.
  • Other Software

  • Cohomology My cohomology package, for calculating Schur multipliers and covering groups of finite groups, and first and second cohomology groups of finite groups on finite modules, is available as a standalone on request.
However, it is now accessible from both of the systems GAP and Magma, and is probably best accessed from one of them.
